  39. 1.      Overview
  40.  
  41.     This directory contains the ELSA WINNER Windows drivers as well
  42.     as ELSA Windows applications, e.g. WINman and SETUP.
  43.  
  44.     The Windows drivers support all resolutions and color depths
  45.     available with the ELSA WINNER graphics boards. All Windows
  46.     drivers on this disk take best advantage of the WINNER
  47.     graphics hardware, thus enabling the full feature set of the
  48.     boards for use in Windows. Ergonomics as well as Windows
  49.     performance are significantly enhanced by the drivers.
  50.  
  51.     WINman is a Windows utility program to configure the rich
  52.     feature set of the drivers. It features a intuitive user
  53.     interface that allows you to configure resolution, color
  54.     depth, refresh rate and the virtual desktop.
  55.     WINman offers extensive online help, describing it's own and
  56.     the Windows drivers' configuration options. Please take the time
  57.     to read the online help! It will help you better take advantage
  58.     of your WINNER graphics board.

  60.     SETUP is an installation program for the installation of the
  61.     ELSA WINNER Windows driver and the ELSA Windows utilities.

  66. 2.      Contents

  117. 3.      Installation
  118.  
  119. 3.1     Installation of the ELSA Windows driver with ELSA SETUP.EXE
  120.  
  121.     You can install the ELSA WINNER Windows drivers with the
  122.     program SETUP.EXE on this disk "Drivers for Windows 3.1x"
  123.     or with CD ROM.
  124.  
  125.     Start Windows, call in the "Program Manager" "File"/"Run ...",
  126.     enter the commandline "a:setup" or the corresponding path on the
  127.     ELSA CD (e.g. \WINNER\1000AVI\WIN31\SETUP.EXE) and confirm with
  128.     "OK".
  129.     SETUP asks for your language, installs the WINNER Windows
  130.     drivers and configures with WINman a fitting graphics mode.
  131.     Afterwards (and also at following calls of SETUP), when the
  132.     Windows driver installation is o.k., you may install additional
  133.     Windows utility programs.
  134.  
  135.  
  136. 3.2     Installation of the ELSA Windows driver with Microsoft SETUP.EXE
  137.  
  138.     Make sure to have the original Windows 3.1 distribution disk
  139.     present. The installation procedure will ask you for some of
  140.     these disks. To install the ELSA WINNER Windows drivers,
  141.     please exit Windows and change to your Windows directory and
  142.     run the Microsoft SETUP program. Select the menu 'displays',
  143.     scroll down to the end of the list and select 'Other'. (In
  144.     case you update an existing installation do NOT select any
  145.     WINNER entries from this list, but rather refer to section 6.1
  146.     in this file.)
  147.  
  148.     SETUP will ask for a floppy disk. Please insert the ELSA
  149.     WINNER Windows disk into your floppy drive and press <Enter>.
  150.     SETUP will offer a list of choices of ELSA WINNER graphic boards
  151.     to install from the floppy.
  152.     Please locate and select the entry that corresponds to product
  153.     name of your WINNER board.' SETUP will install and change all
  154.     neccessary files for you. If you update an existing installation,
  155.     SETUP will ask whether it should update or keep old files. Please
  156.     be sure to press <ESC> to update the existing files. After SETUP
  157.     completes the installation rerun Windows.
  158.  
  159.     ELSA WINman will automatically be launched. WINman is a tool to
  160.     help you configure and customize the WINNER board and your
  161.     monitor. You can request help in WINman anytime by pressing the
  162.     <F1> key.
  163.  
  164.     CAVEAT: Do NEVER enter the path to your Windows system
  165.         directory if SETUP asks for a DISK. Otherwise the
  166.         update fails possibly.
  167.  
  168.     The program WINman cannot change the refresh rate for the
  169.     WINNER 100VL. To change the refresh rate use the
  170.     program REFRESH.EXE on the WINNER System Disk.
  171.

  175. 3.3     User Hints WINman
  176.  
  177.     WINman installs itself in the Program Group ELSAware in Windows.
  178.     After the initial installation and first call, you can call
  179.     WINman from your Program Group ELSAware.
  180.  
  181.     At first use you should run "First ..." completly inclusive
  182.     storing a Windows graphicmode.
  183.  
  184.     Later you may modify your graphics mode under "Graphicmode ...".
  185.  
  186.     After storing more than one graphicmode, WINman starts with a
  187.     fast graphics mode switching menu. Then you may switch your
  188.     Windows graphics mode very fast without testing with test
  189.     screens.
  190.  
  191.     In all menus you will find context sensitive help (with "Help"-
  192.     button or with F1-key).
  193.  
  194.  
  195. 3.4     Video-acceleration with DCI
  196.  
  197. 3.4.1   Installation of DCI-support
  198.  
  199.     To activate the DCI capability of the graphics board, you have
  200.     to install VfW 1.1d (or higher) from the delivered ELSA CD. Even
  201.     when you have installed VfW before, it is necessary to run
  202.     the installation from the ELSA CD, because some additional files
  203.     are copied to the windows system directory and the file
  204.     SYSTEM.INI is modified, too.
  205.     To install VfW you have to run SETUP.EXE under windows from
  206.     the directory \ELSAWARE\VFW from the ELSA CD.
  207.  
  208.     The following files are copied to the windows system directory:
  209.

  213.     The installation-software also modifies the SYSTEM.INI-file:

  222. 3.4.2   Hints
  223.  
  224.     - If an application doesn't use DCI, there will be no
  225.       acceleration.
  226.  
  227.     - DCI allows direct access of visible display-memory (called
  228.       "Primary Surface"). If no DCI is available, an application
  229.       needs two steps to render an image: First it renders the image
  230.       into a bitmap in the computer's main memory. Then it uses GDI
  231.       to copy the bitmap onto the visible display. With DCI the
  232.       program can write directly into the display's memory, which is
  233.       faster than using GDI and a bitmap. The disadvantage is, that
  234.       the data must be compatible to the display's color-depth
  235.       (e.g 8-bit palettized, 16-bit hicolor, 32-bit true-color),
  236.       otherwise the application has to convert the color-space
  237.       itself, which takes a lot of time.
  238.  
  239.       DCI "Primary Surface" is supported by:
  240.  
  241.         1000PRO, 1000TRIO, 1000AVI, 2000AVI, 2000PRO, 2000PRO/X
  242.  
  243.     - Some WINNER-gui-accelerators have integrated circuitry to
  244.       minimize the amount of CPU-power needed to playback video.
  245.       These boards support access to invisible display-memory
  246.       (called "OffScreen Surface"), managed by our WINNER-DCI
  247.       driver.
  248.       When an application finished drawing into offscreen, it
  249.       advises the DCI-driver to render the offscreen-image into
  250.       visible display-memory. The DCI-driver uses the accelerator-
  251.       hardware to perform shrinking, stretching and/or color-
  252.       conversion.
  253.  
  254.       Increasing resolution and color-depth shrinks available
  255.       offscreen-memory, so that a video may not fit into it anymore.
  256.       This causes the DCI-driver to switch back to "Primary
  257.       Surface".
  258.  
  259.       DCI "OffScreen Surface" is supported by:
  260.  
  261.          1000AVI, 2000AVI, 2000PRO/X
  262.  
  263.         - When using DCI with 256 colors, activate color-scheme "windows
  264.       standard".
  265.

  267. 3.5     TrueColor now with 24 bpp
  268.  
  269.     For the graphics boards WINNER 2000AVI-4 and WINNER 2000PRO/X-4
  270.     it is possible to use a 24 bpp driver for TrueColor.
  271.     The big advantage of this feature is that you can use the
  272.     resolution 1280x1024 with TrueColor.

  275. 3.5.1   Hints
  276.  
  277.     - The 24 bpp driver doesn't support DCI. Please use the other
  278.       drivers (8 bpp, 16 bpp, 32 bpp).
  279.     - The ELSA Powerdraft driver for AutoCAD for Windows does not
  280.       support 24 bpp. Please use the other drivers, too.

  285. 4.      Using Windows with a 2nd graphics board
  286.  
  287.     If you use the second WINNER board for Windows add the command
  288.     "board=1" to your "SYSTEM.INI" into the section [WINNER.DRV]
  289.     The entry "2ndbrd" used up to version 3.24 will no longer be
  290.     used.
  291.  
  292.     The following combinations are supported:

  300.     If you have got one combination of the ELSA WINNER boards shown
  301.     above, you can use the special driver MULTIman to spread your
  302.     desktop over two or more monitors, providing the advantage of a
  303.     considerably larger workspace. More informations about that
  304.     contains the file README.TXT on the disk "MULTIMAN" or in the
  305.     corresponding directory on the ELSA CD.
  306.  
  307.     Known problems:
  308.     This driver version does not support "DOS FULL SCREEN"
  309.     using the parameter "board=1"

  394. 6.      Caveats
  395.  
  396.     This section documents known anomalies or problems and gives
  397.     hints on work arounds.
  398.  
  399.  
  400. 6.1     Network Installations
  401.  
  402.     Installing Windows system components in a networked environment
  403.     is also possible with the ELSA installation program SETUP.EXE
  404.     under Windows. (see 3.1 Installation of the ELSA Windows driver
  405.     with SETUP.EXE)
  406.  
  407.  
  408. 6.2     Known Application Problems
  409.  
  410.     This section describes known problems with applications and (if
  411.     possible) circumvents.
  412.  
  413.     - Several multimedia applications reports an error message as
  414.       "You may encounter display performance problems, please
  415.       contact the manufacturer of your video board to see if an
  416.       update driver is available". If the CPU timing is decreased
  417.       the animations are displayed much slower, but the error
  418.       message does not occure. This is an internal bug of the
  419.       multimedia application which computes the video performance of
  420.       highspeed drivers incorrect on fast computer systems.
  421.  
  422.     - Aldus Freehand: Moving of a zoomed part of the image can cause
  423.       bad output.
  424.  
  425.     - The AnimationPlayer uses sometimes wrong colors. This is not
  426.       a driver problem. Instead you may switch off 'color cycling'
  427.       in the options menu and the problem disappears.
  428.  
  429.     - Borland does not support S3 based video adapters as WINNER in
  430.       the Turbo Debugger. After quit debugging Windows cannot be
  431.       displayed correctly because a special DLL is missing.
  432.  
  433.     - There is a hidden flag in CorelDraw 3.0/4.0 which controls the
  434.       use of graphic primitives (scanline or polygon based) to draw
  435.       the image. Search for the 'CDrawConfig' section in
  436.       CORELDRW.INI and expand it by the line 'UseClippingForFills=0'.
  437.       After this change CorelDraw can paint their images much faster.
  438.  
  439.     - In CorelPhotoPaint the images are only black and white with
  440.       4 bpp / 16 colors.
  441.  
  442.     - Please don't start the Benchmark Hercules Speedy by using the
  443.       <F2> function key. Use <Alt C> <CR> instead for "Control, Auto
  444.       Run".
  445.  
  446.     - The screen saver ELSA POWERman works fine with ELSA WINNER
  447.       drivers, but other drivers such as VGA.DRV do not support the
  448.       POWERman.
  449.  
  450.     - ImageStar: Bad output when using 16M colors.
  451.  
  452.     - Lotus Freelance: Using the magnifying glass causes sometimes
  453.       to bad output.
  454.  
  455.     - Lotus Organizer: For window sizes > 800x600 there is a colored
  456.       rectangle at the bottom of the page.
  457.  
  458.     - The program MICROCOM Carbon Copy does not work with ELSA
  459.       WINNER.
  460.  
  461.     - In Micrografx Designer 4.0 occures a problem after convert a
  462.       presentation to an executable file (.EXE). Accessing this file
  463.       causes a general protection fault in KRNL386.EXE with ELSA
  464.       WINNER drivers and SVGA also. This is an error of Designer.
  465.  
  466.     - In the application Midisoft Studio 3.10 the output of notes
  467.       and measures may be incorrect after installing the ELSA
  468.       WINNER graphics board. Change the settings in the menu "View,
  469.       Score View Settings". The application computes the correct
  470.       length of measures automatically.
  471.  
  472.     - Application 'Norton Desktop for Windows' (NDW) VirScan hangs
  473.       at 65% of memoryscan. This is due to an illegal memory access
  474.       of VirScan to our board. The next release of NDW might
  475.       probably have a switch to exclude specific memory areas.
  476.  
  477.     - Paintbrush: Flood fill sometimes doesn't work correctly.
  478.  
  479.     - PaintBrush cannot print with HiColor drivers (65000 colors)
  480.       and True-Color drivers (16Mio colors).
  481.  
  482.     - With 16 color drivers PhotoStyler causes general protection
  483.       faults. This is not a driver problem.
  484.  
  485.     - The introductions in Procomm Plus and QuarkXPress are
  486.       incorrect or only in black/white with the driver for 16
  487.       colors.
  488.  
  489.     - Program Manager: If no virtual memory is installed switching
  490.       from windowed DOS box to full screen causes probably loss of
  491.       icons.
  492.  
  493.     - Data input in SPC Harvard Graphics is incorrect with small
  494.       fonts. This is an application bug.
  495.  
  496.     - In WordPerfect 5.1 for Windows there are several problems in
  497.       "view printing page" which are not caused by the drivers.
  498.  
  499.     - WordPerfect 6.0: If you encounter problems when shrinking
  500.       document to less than 35%: Alter entries "xmm=" and "ymm=" in
  501.       file SYSTEM.INI, section [Winner]:
  502.  
  503.         xmm=280
  504.         ymm=210
  505.  
  506.     - PCI systems
  507.       If system/chipset setup has an option BYTE MERGING, this
  508.       option must not be enabled.
  509.  
  510.  
  511. 6.3     Hints to the version:
  512.  
  513.     - With this version 4.0 and the following versions no OS/2
  514.       seamless is supported. There is a special ELSA Windows drivers
  515.       on the ELSA OS/2 driver disk.
  516.  
  517.     - WINNER 1000AVI: With this version no 4 bpp is supported.
  518.  
  519.     - WINNER 1000AVI: The WINman shows on the windows testscreen,
  520.       with the graphicmode 640x480x16 bpp and refresh rates
  521.       smaller than 105 Hz and with the graphicmode 800x600x16 bpp
  522.       and refresh rates smaller than 68 Hz, the appearence of the
  523.       mouse cursor too small and the half of the Windows-screen
  524.       is not usuable. After restarting Windows with these modes
  525.       everything is OK. With the standard testscreen there aren't
  526.       any problems.
  527.  
  528.     - WINNER 1000TRIO, WINNER 1000AVI, WINNER 1000PRO/X and
  529.           WINNER 2000PRO/X:
  530.       The graphics board gets an interrupt from the system bios.
  531.       Sometimes this causes conflicts with other boards in the
  532.       system (e.g. network).
  533.  
  534.     - It is important for the version 4.0 and all following versions
  535.       that the WINNER graphics board is put in the upper memory of
  536.       the system. This address range is calcualted automatically
  537.       and normally there aren't any problems. There are PCI- and
  538.       VL-systems, however, on which this calculation fails, because
  539.       of an error in the motherboard.
  540.  
  541.       In this case the system will hang after displaying the Windows
  542.       startup-logo or somewhere during your Windows session.
  543.       You should modify the file SYSTEM.INI with an editor. Please
  544.       enter the line VRAM-BASE=... in the section [WINNER].
  545.       With the following you can set the address of the WINNER
  546.       graphics board in system memory.
  547.       Examples:
  548.  
  549.       VRAM-BASE=0x04000000
  550.       VRAM-BASE=0x06000000
  551.       VRAM-BASE=0xFC000000
  552.  
  553.       Please note that the last six digits of this number have to be
  554.       equal to zero.
  555.  
  556.     - Using AutoCAD for Windows there might be a problem with the
  557.       appearence of the buttons dependent on the monitor size and the
  558.       choosen resolution. If the position of the buttons is incorrect
  559.       please modify the values for "xmm=" and "ymm=" in the file
  560.       SYSTEM.INI, section [Winner]:
  561.  
  562.         xmm=280
  563.         ymm=210
  564.  
  565.       These changes have to be made after the usage of WINman,
  566.       because this program overwrites these values.
  567.  
  568.     - In MS PowerPoint there might occur a general protection fault
  569.       with special files in foil sort mode (8 bpp: 0006:1BF9,
  570.       16 bpp: 0006:1BEC, 32 bpp: 0006:1BDB).
  571.  
  572.     - Using MS WinWord with large documents there might be a problem
  573.       in during display of screen shots (general protection fault
  574.       with 8 bpp at address 0006:3832).
